Follow your heart…
Advice we’ve all been given, and more than likely at some point, have offered to someone else.
After all, who wants to wake up 5, 10, or more years down the road only to realize we did the “smart” thing – the thing that paid the bills or landed us the prestigious career, but not the thing that we really wanted to do with our lives?
Yet so many of us have no experience with what the heck it even feels like to actually live from our hearts. Instead, we wander around, pretending we are happy with our lives as they are, doing the best we can, with a sneaking suspicion that something is missing.
We live in a society that is driven by our minds, our fears, and our ego. And although we often boast about “living the dream“, rarely do we spend our time placing value or emphasis on living from our true passion or spirited purpose.
Somewhere along the line, we get caught in the velvet trap, killing ourselves to make a buck and establish a life that offers security, stability, and perhaps even a prestigious reputation. We ignore what our hearts want, and instead keep ourselves busy with trying to get ahead and make something of ourselves in this world.
Why does it seem so much easier for us to numb our feelings and live in denial, rather than take an honest look at our lives, and get real about which parts of our lives we love, and which parts we do not; facing the truth about what is holding us back from going after the life we desperately want?
There’s no doubt that the path which seduces the heart is completely unconventional, and ignores all reason.
And yes, it’s scary as hell and involves taking risks. It takes courage, requiring the bravest of souls to take a detour from the well-trodden path, and rebel against the expectations of society, family and friends.
And I gotta tell you – initially it will feel like a long and lonely road. Some days will leave you feeling fully alive and absolutely petrified at the same time. I like to call this living on purpose. I mean, after all, isn’t that the point?
The heart journey, if you choose it, will be one wild and unbridled ride. And If you are the one who likes to play it safe, the choice to start following your heart will turn life as you know it upside down.
But if you can manage the journey, your reward will be a life that you have custom-designed just for you, with absolutely nothing standing in your way… especially regret!
